Harnessing lower carbon and renewable energy sources, such as gas, solar and wind power, not only aligns with environmental stewardship goals worldwide, but also addresses the industry&#8217;s growing energy demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional mining operations are incredibly energy-intensive, and the adoption of renewables offers a dual benefit: mitigating the ecological impact associated with fossil fuel consumption and can potentially provide a cost-effective alternative. The implementation of renewable technology reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the diversification of the industry\u2019s energy sources, and contributes to a more sustainable and responsible mining ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-large-font-size\">In line with AngloGold&#8217;s commitment to improve efficiency and reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% by 2030, the Company unveiled plans to implement one of the largest off-grid renewable energy projects in the Australian resource industry, to power it\u2019s Tropicana gold mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AngloGold Ashanti commissioned an Independent Power Provider to construct and operate a 62 MW hybrid wind and solar facility 330 km east-northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. The facility is projected to reduce average carbon emissions by over 65,000 tonnes annually during the 10-year construction of this renewable project was well underway by end 2023, and is expected to be commissioned by Q1 2025. The project is running to schedule with the four wind turbine foundations completed and piling for the solar farm underway. The next milestone will be the arrival of the turbine components in Q2 2024.
